The Northern Yasawas are a group of ten low lying islands - the highest point is on Matacawalevu at just under three hundred metres – with  rolling hills covered in tall grass. Its beaches are the main attraction, with excellent snorkelling and scuba diving along an intricate network of coral reefs which makes boat travel around many of the bays impossible at low tide. Between May and October, yachts congregate around the sheltered bay between Matacawalevu and Nanuya. The northern-most island of the group, the long thin Yasawa Island , has undulating hills and cliffs with sweeping fine white sandy beaches used as picnic stopovers by luxury overnight cruises.

Matacawalevu and Nanuya
Elongated Long Beach , a beautiful one kilometre stretch of fine white sand fronts an alluring turquoise bay at the southern end of the Northern Yasawas . The lagoon boasts three resorts: Long Beach Resort is a budget escape for backpackers whilst across the bay on adjacent Yaqeta Island is the Italian owned and Mediterranean designed upmarket Navutu Stars Resort. On the eastern side of the bay is the fabulously exclusive Turtle Island Resort on Nanuya Island which boasts fourteen private beaches for its fourteen couples. There’s more down-to-earth accommodation on Nanuya Lailai, slightly north, which has three backpacker resorts plus the beautiful Nanuya Island Resort, an affordable boutique property overlooking the gorgeous white sand and shallow turquoise lagoon on the west side. The beach here is the same one used by Blue Lagoon Cruises..

Tavewa
Tavewa is a freehold island with no village and two long established backpacker resorts which seem forever at each others throats. The west coast, as with Matacawalevu, is rugged and inaccessible. The rather brusque Coral Beach Resort is along the east beach which at its northern end is subjected to the full force of the trade winds. When it’s not blowing, there’s a fantastic coral wall offshore and if you head a little further out, there’s a good chance you’ll see reef sharks here. The nicest beach is around the sheltered Savutu Point at the southern tip of Tavewa close to Fanny & Otto’s accommodation for budget travellers, which has good swimming and snorkeling. For fishing lovers, there’s good casting from the beach into the offshore reefs..

Nacula
At 32 square kilometers, Nacula is the third largest of the Yasawa Islands . The southern side of the island has fantastic beaches including the kilometre long crescent sands alongside Oarsman’s Bay Lodge and Safe landing Resort. Walking trails along a grassy inland ridge connects both resorts and leads up to the 238 metre summit of Naisau from where you can see the entire Yasawa chain of islands on a clear day..

Sawa-i-Lau
The rather exciting caves on Sawa-i-Lau lie off the north coast of Nacula in a pretty bay hugging the south point of Yasawa Island . The main chamber is around fifteen metres high with limestone pillars and natural sunlight streaming in from above..

Yasawa Island
The long thin Yasawa Island has impressive cliffs along its west coast. Despite its brilliant white sand beaches, there’s just one upmarket resort on the island, positioned on a secluded long stretch of deep sand close to the grass airstrip that’s used exclusively to charter in its guests. Several of the northern beaches are leased to one of the two luxury overnight cruise companies which visit almost daily. All six villages are found on the east coast of the island where lagoons are more bountiful with seafood - the fishing village of Teci is one of the most authentic in Fiji with over half its homes being traditional thatch roof bures..

Turtle Island
Off the east coast of Vuake Village, less than a mile across the lagoon, is Turtle Island Resort, a private island (Nanuya Island) with just 14 gorgeous bures and 14 private beaches. This is the domain of the super rich and famous with all inclusive prices starting from around US$2000 per couple which includes picnic lobsters and French champagne.
